Welcome to chicken keeping. If you are anything like me, you’ve become obsessed with having rainbow eggs. So now you need hens that lay all the colors, including the beautiful blue and green eggs! Luckily for you, we will go over different breeds of chickens, what color eggs they lay, and how to get them to add to your flock! Plus, stick around ’till the end for a bonus chicken that lays PINK eggs!
First up, how can you find these unique colorful egg-laying hens? I prefer to find them at my local Tractor Supply. Starting in spring through late summer they have “chick days” which basically means they sell chicks during these months! I like to call around five or six locations and ask what breeds they have in stock. If they don’t have what I’m looking for, then I’ll call again next week and so on. How much are these chickens? Since they are considered “premium” they are usually a little more expensive than normal chicks, about $6-7 per pullet (pullet is the word they use for a female chick, make sure you always get pullets if you want eggs)!
Another way is from Hoover’s Hatchery or other online chick providers. The biggest downside with these is that they usually have long waits and a large minimum order size.
So, what chickens lay blue eggs? What chickens lay green eggs? Here are my TOP 5 easy going, beginner friendly chickens for beautiful rainbow eggs!
Easter Egger
The Easter Egger chicken is the most popular when it comes to rainbow eggs and for a good reason!
Easter egger chicken temperament: very friendly, loving and hardy hens. Hardly ever aggressive, the easter egger is the perfect addition to any flock! To top it off, they typically lay beautiful light green or blue eggs, and sometimes even pink eggs!
Cream Legbar
Cream Legbar chickens are another great beginner chicken!
Cream Legbar chicken temperament: They are friendly, hardy, good foragers, quiet, and lay gorgeous pale blue eggs. Their quietness makes them a great option for any suburban backyard chicken flock! They also don’t go broody often and get along well with other chicks.
Ameraucana
Ameraucana chickens are also a very popular chicken that lay blue eggs. The bright baby blue eggs are absolutely stunning!
Ameraucana Chicken temperament: These hens are docile, good with kids, and hardy! However, they do best when they are able to free range daily.
Olive Egger
Olive Eggers lay these amazing deep green eggs. Reminds me of the good old Dr.Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham!
Olive Green Egger temperament: They are great beginner hens because they are typically docile, friendly, and hardy!
Starlight Green Egger
I myself have two starlight green Eggers named Fern and Clover! They are basically Easter Eggers that will only lay these pretty sage green eggs.
Starlight Green Egger temperament: In my experience, they are super hardy, easy going hens that love to forage! These hens can be a bit skittish but once you gain their trust they are sweethearts!
BONUS! What chicken lays pink eggs? Well, some and none! Pink and purple eggs are really brown eggs with a heavy bloom that will come off once washed. But still, they are so fun to find! So here’s a chicken that lays pink eggs!
Lavender Orpington
An all around great hen to introduce to your flock! Lavender Orpington chickens lay brown eggs and when they have a heavy bloom, they look baby pink!
Lavender Orpington temperament: These hens are very sweet, easy going, and hardy with extreme temperatures. Great for a novice chicken keeper!
If you are ready to begin your journey with raising chickens, here are my favorite products from Amazon! I tried to find the most affordable options possible when I was on my journey, so here’s what I got:
- Feeder + Waterer ($19.99)
- Brooder ($53)
- Medicated Chick Feed ($7) I’d suggest one bag per chick for their first eight weeks before moving onto normal feed.
- For the brooder box, I found a 27 gallon tote from Lowe’s for $11!
